Why Score Legislators?

Extreme weather and record-breaking heat have placed the nation and families in unprecedented times, and it’s clear climate change is the existential crisis of our lifetimes.

About 75% of the country’s climate goals will be met at the state and local level. But, it’ll take bold action against the climate crisis to meet these standards. This is why Climate Cabinet Action released its newest National Scorecard that’s aimed to hold state legislators accountable for their votes on important climate legislation.

This Scorecard can equip lawmakers, voters, and journalists with the facts and trends needed to assess how state governments are approaching the fight against climate change - or lack thereof. Voters can discover how over 4,200 state legislators in 27 U.S. states voted on over 475 critical climate and environmental justice bills – including their own state representatives.

It’s important to note: Due to the decennial redistricting period, some legislators may have taken climate votes when they represented their old districts. To best inform the public, Climate Cabinet’s National Scorecard has labeled state legislators according to their new/current districts and not the district they represented when taking climate votes.

A Note of Thanks

The Climate Cabinet National Scorecard is an aggregate of publicly-available on-the-ground analysis by partners in the environmental movement, filtered down to only include climate, clean energy, environmental justice, and democracy votes. We extend our thanks to environmental leaders across the country – including from the following organizations:
